Beginner Sourdough Class

Join Bethany from Chillspice in a four hour workshop where you’ll learn all about making sourdough bread!
She’ll teach you how to make a loaf of sourdough, feed and maintain a sourdough starter, explain fermentation basics, and show you how to shape the dough. You’ll cover the entire process from start to finish.
You’ll learn:
Sourdough Starter Maintenance: Understand what a sourdough starter is and how to maintain it.
Fermentation and Proofing: Discover how these processes improve your bread’s texture and flavor.
Shaping and Scoring: See how to shape boule(round loaf) and score it for your desired look.
Dough Strengthening: Learn tips to build dough tension during bulk fermentation and how to use a digital food scale

What to bring to class:
A digital food scale (If you don’t have one, some will be available to purchase at class for $28)
For baking the day after class:
Make sure you have high quality parchment paper and some sort of pot with a lid that you can bake your bread in the next day.

A round cast iron Dutch oven 6 quart or larger or an aluminum or stainless steel roaster pan will all work well.

This 16 in pan is a good option  from Amazon.

Or this 18 in pan

Dollar General also sells an 18 in pan in their stores that works well too.

You can use also a cast iron Dutch oven if you have one. A 6 quart or larger is ideal.  Here’s a budget priced one on Amazon

A 5 quart will work but your dough might be a little squished. (Please note that you DON’T need to bring the parchment paper and baking pot to class.)

She’ll talk about the the sourdough mindset and snack on sourdough bread and sourdough chocolate chip cookies+ other snacks.

You’ll take home:
Dough in a tea towel and colander to bake the next day
An Aliquot jar (dough clock)
A printed workbook with the recipe and instructions
A container of sourdough starter (that is 230+ years old from San Francisco)
A digital course with lessons and video tutorials via email
An option to join the Beginner’s Sourdough Workshop private Facebook group
And, finally, the knowledge to bake sourdough all on your own over and over again which is priceless!
There will also be a few fun sourdough tools for sale during class. To purchase these items, Chillspice accepts cash (preferably), Venmo, and PayPal.
